Brighten the Path to School

November 6, 2026

As the mornings get darker this winter, we're inviting our Abbotsford community to help make the journey to school a little brighter.

On November 8, coinciding with Diwali, the Festival of Lights, we're launching our Brighten the Path to School campaign. We're encouraging residents and businesses to turn on their existing outdoor lights during the morning school commute to bring a little extra light and warmth to neighbourhoods across Abbotsford.

With British Columbia's move to permanent daylight-saving time, students will be travelling to school in darker conditions throughout the winter months. We believe even a small gesture can make a meaningful difference and remind students that their community is looking out for them.

"One of the things that makes Abbotsford special is how our community comes together to support children and families," says Dr. Nathan Ngieng, Superintendent of Abbotsford School District. "Brighten the Path to School is a simple way for all of us to do something positive. It's not about how many lights we turn on, but the spirit behind the gesture and showing our students that they're part of a community that cares."

As we mark the launch on Diwali, the Festival of Lights, we're inviting residents and businesses to take part by turning on their outdoor lights during the morning hours, particularly between 7 and 9 a.m.

Whether it's a porch light, a holiday display, storefront lighting or outdoor decorations, every little bit helps brighten the morning journey for our students.

We also encourage families to review Fraser Health's tips for helping students stay safe and supported during darker winter mornings.

Residents and businesses are invited to participate throughout the winter and share their efforts on social media using #BrightenThePathAbby.
