Student Health Policy
Individuals That Should Remain Home
- Any student who has symptoms of COVID-19. Refer to the BC Thrive Assessment before sending your child to school.
- Any student who has cold, influenza, or COVID-19 like symptoms. Parents should call 811 and follow the directions of public health before sending their child to school.
- Students who experience seasonal allergies or other COVID-19-like symptoms, which are related to an existing condition can continue to attend school when they are experiencing these symptoms as normal. *If they experience any change in symptoms, they should call 811 and follow the directions of public health before sending their child to school
Daily Health Assessment
Parents and caregivers MUST assess their child daily for illness BEFORE sending them to school and/or on the bus. Please utilize the provincial BC Thrive Assessment for the daily assessment of symptoms.
Staff and other adults must complete a daily health check before entering the school by QR code or paper copy at the entrance.
If a student or other adult is sick, they MUST NOT enter the school.
It continues to be standard school policy to stay at home if a student is sick to help prevent the spread of germs to others.
Protocol if a student develops symptoms of illness at school
If a student develops symptoms at school, the school should:
- Provide the student with a non-medical mask if they don’t have one (exceptions will be made for students who cannot wear masks for medical and/or disability-related reasons).
- Provide the student with a supervised space where they can wait comfortably that is separated from others.
- Contact the student’s parent/caregiver and/or emergency contact with a request to have the child picked up as soon as possible.
- The parent is encouraged to call 811 and follow the directions of public health before sending their child back to school.
Standard School Health Policy
If a child is too sick to go out at recess and lunch, he/she is too sick to be at school. Sick children need to stay home until they are feeling better. In fairness to our other students and staff members, please do not send your child to school if there are definite signs of ill health in the morning. We do not have the facilities nor the personnel to care for sick children. Good health is necessary for effective learning. Our policy is to get sick children home as soon as possible. Our practice will be to call parents and/or emergency contacts and ask for the student to be picked up.
